Study Questions
Zinn Chapter 1, pages 1-11
1. Zinn’s main purpose for writing A People’s History of the United States is to give an accurate and detailed account of American history from the victims point of view. For instance, instead of writing another history book about the facts of slavery, he chooses to show the slaves stories. 2. Zinn’s thesis in the first eleven pages is that Colombus was not a real hero, like most history books portray him as, and instead he was deceitful the those who supported his journeys, offering them fake promises, and he was a cruel abuser to the Arawaks and other inhabitants of the lands in which he traveled to. 3. According to Zinn, Colombus is portrayed as a hero, when infact he wasn’t. His discovery was completely by accident and the actions he took once he found this ‘new land’ were both cruel and deceitful. “When we read the history books given to children in the United States, it all starts with heroic adventure-there is no bloodshed-and Colombus day is celebrated.” (p. 7) 4. Zinn disputes Henry Kissenger’s statement because he feels that Kissinger only looks at history from the viewpoint of leaders, instead of those who suffered from these leaders policies. Zinn’s viewpoint is to not accept history as the memory of the state, and instead study the true conflicts. 5. Zinn’s criticism about Eliot Morison’s book, Christopher Colombus, Mariner is that though he tells the truth about Columbus’ cruelty, and is in fact so bold as to call it ‘genocide’, he summarizes his feelings by stating that Colombus was infact admirable despite his flaws.

Marianna Covello Frankenstein Paragraph February 2006 Mrs. Salvatore
Victor is responsible for the grotesque acts performed by the monster because he denied his responsibility as the creator of the monster. At the monsters birth, Victor fled the scene as a coward leaving the monster to his own devices, awakening to his senses like a newborn child. Instead of guiding the monster and teaching him the ways of the world, he hid until the creature had exited into the world only to be shunned by society for his ghastly appearance. The creature attempted to reason with his creator, or his “God” as he proclaimed, and requested he fulfill his duty as a father and give him a female companion to converse and live with so he wouldn’t be alone. However, Victor destroyed his creation and refused to provide his “child” with any sort of companionship or love. This led to the lack of morality that caused the monster to bargain with the lives of Victor’s friends and family. Because he was not given the proper teachings a child requires to become a fine, upstanding human being with defined convictions of morality, the creature became an amoral killer who would not hesitate to strangle the life from Victor’s loved ones for his selfish choices. Ultimately, Victor’s lack of guidance is the cause of the monster’s gruesome murders.
